On August 17, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show highlighted this week's National Nuclear Security Administration announcement regarding the successful return of 13.8 pounds of highly-enriched uranium to the United States and the risk that Congressional budget cuts to the NNSA's Global Threat Reduction Initiative may jeopardize similar efforts to secure fissile material from terrorists in the future. At a joint conference, "Next Steps in Arms Control," hosted by the Arms Control Association and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Ambassador Richard Burt emphasized the negative consequences of a failure to ratify New START.  Russia Today featured a portion of his remarks in a recent report on Russia-U.S. relations.  Amb. On July 23, the Arms Control Initiative at the Brookings Institution and the Arms Control Association hosted former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft for a discussion of the New START treaty, assessing how its ratification and implementation will serve the U.S. national interest.
